Q. Why is there an application process for the halaqa? Why isn’t it just open to everyone?
We strongly believe that Islamic knowledge and development programs should be open and accessible to all people, (1) however the Prophet (saaws) recommended that we talk to people at their level so our programs should be catered to the needs of the participants. (2) Compare the halaqa to any program that has prerequisites. The prerequisites for a university program is a high school diploma. The prerequisites of medical school is a university or college degree in a relevant field, high GPA, social work, etc. The prerequisites to entering a prestigious Islamic university is the memorization of the Quran, a powerful command of Arabic, etc. Moreover, all of these programs require applications that are reviewed by the body providing the program. Similarly, MAC Youth would like to ensure that the members of the halaqa are all at the same level of commitment, dedication and interest. (3) Another aspect to any application process is to rate the applicants so as to approve the top applications due to limited resources and space.
To date, we haven’t turned anyone down, elhamdulilah. So please apply!
Our vision is to apply what we learn, and produce something positive. Ilm, manners, and skills learnt throughout the program will be tested when we work together in teams to produce something useful. Imagine if every Halaqa in North America had a project that produces something useful to the community at large. Definitely, it will make a change.
The idea of Excel started with the 2009 MAC Youth Halaqa. All halaqa members successfully introduced a new and wonderful project; www.c-islam.com. This project aims to present a real picture of Muslims in the North American society. Our project will provide excellent quality and high resolution pictures to media, search engines, NGOs and Islamic institutions such as MSAs in North America. In addition, it will provide a venue for talented and professional photographers to upload photos with a real representation of Muslims.
